"The Jülich Citadel is one of the oldest and best preserved fortifications of its kind north of the Alps. It was built in the middle of the 16th century after the devastating fire of 1547 made it necessary to rebuild the city. The almost square fortress has a side length of about 300 meters from bastion to bastion and is on average about 12.5 meters high.
