Built as a Benedictine monastery church of a monastery complex documented since 1007, its construction probably dates back to the period between 1060 and 1080. At the beginning of the 13th century the monastery reached its heyday and exercised jurisdiction over 42 churches and vast estates and territories. After a long decline, the abbey was abolished in the 15th century; only a few rooms have survived from the monastery complex.

What is the architectural significance of Abbazia di San Vittore alle Chiuse?

The abbey is a significant example of Romanesque architecture with notable Byzantine influences, making it unique in the Marche region. Its Greek cross plan inscribed within a square, the arrangement of five semicircular apses, and the central cupola with an octagonal tiburium are distinctive features. The compact, almost cubic, volumetric mass and its towers give it a fortress-like appearance, reflecting its ancient origins as a Benedictine monastic complex dating back to the 11th century.

What is the historical context of the 'alle Chiuse' in the abbey's name?

The name 'alle Chiuse' translates to 'at the enclosures' or 'at the closed places'. This is believed to derive from its isolated and picturesque location, embraced and almost 'closed in' by the surrounding mountains within the stunning scenario of the Regional Park of Gola Rossa and Frasassi. It perfectly describes the abbey's setting at the confluence of two rivers, nestled within a gorge.
