On December 15, 1944, the lives of the residents of the Nieuwe Markt took a dramatic turn when their square was bombed. A bomb landed in the middle of the square, exactly where the 'Latin school' now stands. Was it a stray bomb or was it a targeted action? The war was already coming to an end and such a bombardment was completely unexpected.

When the air raid siren went off, the children present and their parents took shelter in the basements of the houses on the Nieuwe Markt and the Grote Kerkhof. In the hours and days that followed, the families slowly emerged from their cellars, shocked and afraid. Some had to be dug out, others had already fled.

This intense event connects the children from then until today.
