In Pego Escuro, the Ribeira de Odeleite winds its way along the mouth of the Vale Formoso. This Algarve tributary of the Guadiana rises in Vale Maria Dias, not far from here. Its name, Odeleite, is said to have Arabic roots, meaning "river of the eloquent".
