A stunningly beautiful moated castle in a beautiful setting with a large landscaped park. The castle can be visited, even though the owner (Prince of Salm-Salm) still lives there. Tours are only possible with a guided tour. However, you can enter the park.

Very large moated castle with hotel and museum in a fairly well maintained park. Since cars are allowed to enter the courtyard for the hotel driveway, you can also get there by bike ;-)

The Anholt moated castle in Isselburg is one of the most impressive castle complexes in Westphalia and has been the family property of the Princely House of Salm and Salm-Salm since 1641 and is privately inhabited. The moated castle is surrounded by a 35 hectare, beautiful castle park. Directly adjacent to the historic landscape park is a golf course and Anholter Schweiz, which is well worth seeing. You shouldn't miss a short trip across the border to the beautiful Achterhoek.

The Castle Anholt or Waterburcht Anholt (German Schloss Anholt) is a water castle that was also namesake to the former city of Anholt, now a suburb of Isselburg in North Rhine-Westphalia. The origin of this castle lies in a fortress from the 12th century to secure the possession of the diocese of Utrecht. Although the name suggests that Anholt is a fortress, it is actually a castle.

Anholt Castle gave its name to the former town of Anholt. Today, it is a district of Isselburg in North Rhine-Westphalia.

This remarkable castle is one of the largest moated castles in the Münsterland region and is located on the border with the Lower Rhine. Its origins lie in a 12th-century fortification built to secure the property of the Diocese of Utrecht. The moat (a Westphalian term for a moat that originally surrounded a noble residence for defensive purposes) is fed by the Issel River.

In 1169, a Lord of Sulen "en Anholt" is first mentioned as a vassal of the Utrecht Bishop Gottfried von Rhenen. Historians therefore assume that Anholt Castle was built before that year to protect the extensive diocese territories. However, it is historically confirmed that it was built under Stephen III at the latest. von Sulen the feudal relationship with Utrecht was ended, because at that time the castle and the surrounding village were an imperial lordship that belonged to the Lower Rhine-Westphalian Imperial Circle.
