Casera Tartoi rises at 1707 m, in a magnificent alpine basin between the slopes of Mount Piova and those of Mount Tiarfin. The building, recently renovated and managed in the summer, reflects the typical style of the Fornesi huts: a base entirely in stone, embedded in the ground, the upper floor in larch wood and the roof covered with shingles. The ground floor, with kitchen, pantry and dining room, was used for milk processing; the first floor, accessed by an external staircase, is divided into dormitories, with a portico projecting onto the main facade. The cattle shelter, which flanks the dairy, has the usual square shape so as to optimize the work space. Entering the "tàmar" you can see the extremely low height of the shelters, testifying to a fine selection of small-sized cattle, suitable for these alpine pastures. Perched perfectly at the foot of the Patinostri, Casera Tartoi is surrounded by hills typical of the Carnic Pre-Alps, grassy mountains suitable for rough sheep grazing, leaving the few valley plains for cattle. The paths tread the ancient furrows of transhumance, those that lead to the wild meadows of high glacial terraces. Paths that lead to the slopes of the Tudali, to the Agons amphitheater and to the Tiàrfin plateaus. Always the darling of the Fornesi, for the quality of its pastures, the hut was built up until the 1980s. It is still used today, even if with smaller numbers and only heifers. Note the inscription on the entrance lintel: "M.C.T. 2 July 1874 was built on the ruins", that is, Malga Comunale Tartoi.
