The original Cave of the Winds was a natural cave discovered in 1834 behind Bridal Veil Falls, initially known as Aeolus's Cave. Guided tours began in 1841. However, a series of rockfalls, notably in 1920 and a massive one in 1954, obliterated the natural cave. The modern attraction, which reopened in 1924, brings visitors to the front of Bridal Veil Falls on a series of decks and walkways, recreating the immersive experience.
Visiting the Hurricane Deck involves descending 175 feet (approximately 53 meters) into the Niagara Gorge via an elevator. Once at the base, you navigate wooden walkways and stairs. While the experience is generally considered accessible, the surfaces can be very slippery due to the constant mist and spray from the falls. It's an immersive, wet experience rather than a traditional hike, but sturdy footwear is highly recommended.
The Hurricane Deck itself is the primary landmark, offering an unparalleled, up-close view of Bridal Veil Falls. From this vantage point, you are just feet away from the roaring water, experiencing tropical storm-like conditions. Within Niagara Falls State Park, there are numerous other viewpoints and trails that offer different perspectives of all three Niagara Falls, including the American Falls and Horseshoe Falls.
Parking is available within Niagara Falls State Park. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, as parking lots can fill up quickly. There are designated parking areas for visitors, and from there, you can access the entrance to the Cave of the Winds attraction.
The Hurricane Deck is typically accessible from spring through fall. The wooden decks and stairs are meticulously removed each autumn to prevent damage from ice buildup and are rebuilt every spring. Therefore, the full Hurricane Deck experience is not available during the winter months. Visiting during warmer seasons ensures you can fully experience the attraction.
Yes, the Hurricane Deck is widely considered a family-friendly attraction. It offers an exhilarating and immersive experience that appeals to all ages, allowing visitors to get incredibly close to the immense power of Niagara Falls. Children and adults alike enjoy the sensation of the mist and wind.
Visitors should be prepared to get thoroughly drenched. Ponchos are provided, but you will still get very wet. Wearing waterproof or quick-drying clothing is a good idea. Sturdy, waterproof footwear is highly recommended, as the wooden walkways can be extremely slippery. Special sandals are sometimes offered, but your own appropriate shoes are best.
The Hurricane Deck is located within Niagara Falls State Park, which offers various amenities including gift shops and snack bars. The surrounding city of Niagara Falls, New York, provides a wide range of cafes, restaurants, pubs, and accommodation options, from budget-friendly to luxury hotels, all within a short distance of the park.
The original Cave of the Winds was a natural cave located directly behind Bridal Veil Falls. The Hurricane Deck is part of the modern attraction that was developed after the natural cave was destroyed by rockfalls. Today, the Hurricane Deck consists of a series of wooden walkways and stairs that bring visitors to the front and base of Bridal Veil Falls, allowing for a similar, intensely wet and windy experience, but not within a natural cave.
While the Canadian side of Niagara Falls (Horseshoe Falls) is often noted for its panoramic views and sheer volume of water, the Hurricane Deck on the American side offers a uniquely immersive, up-close experience. It allows visitors to stand directly at the base of Bridal Veil Falls, feeling the full force of the mist and wind. Many visitors enjoy experiencing both sides for different perspectives of this natural wonder.
