The Knights' Staircase is a set of stairs hewn into a rock on the Teufelsmauer near Timmenrode in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt.
It is also known as the stone staircase and is located on the northern outer wall of the Teufelsloch cave near the Hamburg coat of arms.
The knight's staircase consists of individual steps worked into the rock.
The ascent over thirteen steps begins near the foot of the rock.
The stairs reach a large rock window of the Teufelsloch.
Slightly offset to the west, the knight's staircase then leads up the edge of the window via a further 28 steps to the top of the rock.
There are various rock carvings on the side of the stairs.
Noteworthy is an older carving of a cross to the right of the lower part of the staircase.
The motive for the attachment is unclear.
The reason for the construction of the stairs is also unknown.
There is speculation about a small castle complex on the rock, in connection with which such a staircase could stand.
The unsecured ascent is considered dangerous.
In the literature, the use of a safety rope is recommended when climbing.
