The Jungfernstieg was originally called Reesendamm, which was built to dam the Alster. In 1665 the embankment became a promenade with rows of trees where families and their unmarried daughters went for a walk on Sundays (hence the name).
In 1838, the Jungfernstieg was the first road in Germany to be paved.

The Alster tours begin here. We decided on the 1-hour journey, 20 euros per person, unfortunately the Hamburgcard doesn't help. But it was very informative, sat well, saw a lot, funny comment. Sitting on the right side does more. There was a toilet and a drinks machine.

The Binnenalster is 0.2 square kilometers in size.
It is also called the parlor of Hamburg.
You can shop at Jungfernstieg and Ballindamm and enjoy the view of the Hamburg skyline from Lombardsbrücke.
