    The Frankish imperial annals reported in 822 in connection with the collapse of a salt dome from Arnseo - the Arendsee.

    In 1183, the monastery Arendsee was founded, a Benedictine monastery, the Margrave Otto I, son Albrecht of the Bear, had donated. The Romanesque abbey church, which dates from 1185, has been preserved.

    The city rights received Arendsee in 1457 under Elector Frederick II of Brandenburg. During the Thirty Years' War, the city of Arendsee was plundered several times. In 1685, the mill of the village sank in a salt dump in the lake and helped it to its present form. He is the largest burglary lake in northern Germany. In 1831 a chapel burned down in the village since about 1381. 1881/82, the present St. John's Church was built. From 1910, the walking preacher Gustaf Nagel erected the now only partially preserved Gustaf-Nagel site on the banks of the Arendsee. From 1939, the 1837/38 built for the city school house was used as the town hall Arendsee. In 1942, HJ Marineschüler destroyed the gustaf nagels garden and temple complex.

    In GDR times Arendsee had a significant tourism show. The lake and its surroundings were in moderation a substitute for the Baltic Sea beach. Numerous holiday homes and a campsite served as accommodation. Since the reunification, the number of day trippers has remained high, but the number of overnight stays has fallen sharply. The children's holiday camp KiEZ Arendsee offers holiday camp offers since GDR times. It was built and maintained by VEB Schwermaschinenbau "Karl Liebknecht" Magdeburg. At that time it bore the name of the Chairman of the KPF Maurice Thorez.

    The district Arendsee (Altmark) has the status of a state-approved health resort. The city belonged until June 30, 1994 to the district Osterburg.
