The Saale is the largest and most important river in Thuringia and the lifeline of many smaller and larger, historically valuable city pearls, which line up along the riverbank.
As a classic water footpath leads the Saale through Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt to the mouth in the Elbe. The diverse, original and almost untouched Thuringian river landscape between Mediterranean-looking limestone cliffs offers ideal conditions for long canoe tours. The varied river course with wide lake areas and narrow banks with varying flow speeds invites you to a leisurely drive through the surrounding low mountain landscape. Short trips to the reservoirs Bleiloch and Hohenwarte, which are part of the "Thüringer Meer", are best for tasting.
The flowing Saale is particularly easy to explore from Saalfeld, Kahla or Jena. The Hohe Schwarm near Saalfeld, the Leuchtenburg near Kahla, the Lobdeburgruine on the southern edge of the city of Jena or the three Dornburg castles attract attention. The Saale is the river with the largest number of castles and palaces in Europe along the course.
