Chicory is the white gold of Flanders. A robust vegetable with an elegant, delicate flavor that needs to be cared for and cherished. In this museum you will experience its history. It is not just the story of a vegetable, but the story of the region and its inhabitants.

The 1950s and 1960s were the golden years for the white plant. There was a gardener on every street, and everyone had at least a few beds of chicory in their garden. As befits farmers who live to the rhythm of the seasons, there was always reason to celebrate, because anyone who works with Mother Nature knows that nothing can be taken for granted. Vegetables were (and are) celebrated: with balls, festivals and parades, a whole culture grew up around them.

Here at the Witloofmuseum you will learn to understand the differences between hydroponics and soil cultivation. You wander through history, tales and facts from season to season. From the chicory shed to the research laboratory, from the field to the auction. And afterwards one of the typical dishes of the region tastes even better with the white gold!
