The lake and the eponymous excursion - Gaststätte Wiesbüttsee, a former customs house, is located in the Spessart next to the historic highways Eselsweg and Birkenhainer Straße about three kilometers from meadows. The Wiesbüttsee was created in 1765 for mining and today is a popular destination. Directly behind is the Wiesbütt Moor, the last high moor in the Spessart with rare plants. The hiking trails around the moor are also suitable for wheelchair users.

The Wiesbüttsee is an artificial lake. It was dammed up by Bieber miners in the 18th century to use hydroelectric power to operate machines for dewatering and aeration of tunnels, as well as the processing of ores. Following the lake was the highest lying bog of the Spessart. Here are rare plants and animals, such as sheath wool grass, sundew and adder. The entire area around the lake and the moor is therefore protected.
Next to the lake there is a campsite with catering.
Due to the dry summer of 2018, the water level of the lake and the moor has fallen dangerously high.

The small, beautifully situated Wiesbüttsee has its charms in every season and is ideal for long hikes for young and old. Together with the Wiesbütt moor, a designated nature reserve was created here. Unfortunately the inn has now closed!

In earlier centuries there was a resting place at Wiesbüttsee for trade carts and teams that transport goods on the Eselsweg, Birkenhainer Straße and Wiesener Straße through the Spessart. The above-mentioned high-altitude trails all come together at Wiesbüttsee. Animals could also be watered at the Judenborn on the neighboring Wiesbüttmoor. The rest area was administered by the Wiesen office, which was part of the Electoral Mainz area.
