The first plantings in this arboretum were carried out in 1907. The original intention was to see which tree species could be planted on a large scale on this poor soil. At that time there was a particular need for mining wood, and Corsican pine was mainly used as a test. The specimens that were planted at that time are currently the oldest in the region. The function of the arboretum is now only educational. A broader collection is therefore being pursued, with an emphasis on an extensive oak collection. More than 30 oak species can now be admired in the arboretum. Despite the fact that this is the smallest forest arboretum in Flanders, it now houses more than 100 species and even some 'champions' such as a very large Colorado silver fir, a turned pine, a thorn pine and a Douglas fir.

The Arboretum of Peer is 3.2 ha in size and consists of 3 parts (a northern part, the oak arboretum and a southern part), divided on the basis of the landscape view and the existing infrastructure. The Arboretum falls within the Resterheide area.

The northern part contains more special tree species. The oak arboretum (with smaller oaks) was planted in 2006 by students of the guidance centre Sint-Elisabeth. The initiative for this came from the municipality of Peer following the design of the forest trail.
