The water tower was used to regulate the distribution of drinking water in Colmar, which was supplied by the municipal factories from July 1884. It is the work of Swiss engineer Henri Grüner and city architect Jean-Baptiste-Victor Huen. The tower, characteristic of the German neo-Gothic style, is located on one of the highest points in the city. It has been part of the Colmar landscape since 1886. At a height of 53 meters, the water tower had a capacity of 1200 m3. It has not been used since 1984 and it is no longer the oldest of the water towers preserved in Alsace.

This water tower was built between 1884 and 18863 under the direction of Victor Huen and engineer Heinrich Grüner.
It was inaugurated on June 22, 1886 and taken out of service in 1983.
It is the oldest surviving one in the region, but has not been used as such since 1984 because the storage capacity was no longer sufficient in relation to demand.
Since April 16, 1993, the water tower has been registered as a historical monument, with the exception of its roof, which dates from 1961.
