Sailing ship with auxiliary engine 'Marie'

On March 25, 1945, coming from Hamburg with a load of briquettes, the ship was hit by a mine on the Elbe near Krautsand and sank. Captain Gustafson, all alone on board, was killed. In 1979, the wreck of the 'Marie' was found by chance. As it represented an obstacle to shipping, it had to be cleared. The wreck was identified as the former 'Marie' with the help of the seal (found inside the wreck). Its inscription provided a clue in the direction of Cuxhaven-Altenbruch. The captain's widow, who lived there, was thus tracked down. She kindly gave a number of documents about her husband and his ship to the wreck museum. In 2013, the ship was brought back to Altenbruch harbor.
