Lichtervelde is located at the intersection of two railway lines that cross West Flanders: line 66, which runs from Bruges to Kortrijk, and line 73, which runs from Deinze (although still East Flanders) to De Panne.
The first trains entered Lichtervelde in 1847, when line 66 Bruges-Torhout was extended. Line 73 was not built until 11 years later.
The actual station building - which has been protected since 2015 - was 'only' built in 1895.

0pgewar: since 1 March 2024, the ticket offices of this station are only open during the week between 7 and 10.15 am... and I can testify that the electronic lock is not yet fully up to par: a woman who was able to enter with her two children (around 8 pm) could no longer get out. A call to an emergency number of the NMBS was necessary to free the family remotely...
