The Ludwig-Danube-Main-Canal had to cope with 100 locks and a height difference of 264 meters between the Danube and the Main: 80 m with 32 locks from Kelheim up to the summit hold, 184 m from there with 68 more locks down to Bamberg.

A thousand years after Charlemagne tried in vain to connect the Main with the Danube by means of a canal, a Bavarian monarch set about realizing this plan: King Ludwig I (1824 - 1848). In July 1846, the "Ludwig-Donau-Main-Canal" was opened to traffic. From lock no. 1 in Kelheim to lock no. 100 in Bamberg, a link between the Black Sea and the North Sea was achieved with the 172.44 km long waterway. The 65 km of it that are still preserved today are among the most beautiful relics of German industrial culture and are under monument protection.
