"... Former gravel excavation with very clear water between the Garather Forest and Hilden-Süd. The underwater vegetation is well developed with lawns of cactus algae and submerged aquatic plants. Floating leaf plants are also locally present in the south. The older steep banks in the south, west and east are covered with poplars, alders and willows. In the east, large shore areas are periodically dry shallow water zones separated from the rest of the lake by small walls, at the edges of which reed beds and tall herbaceous meadows have developed. This is followed by a larger, sandy-gravelly woody area with pioneers - and dry grass elements as well as a small body of water. The forest areas bordering the lake to the west are made up of mixed maple and spruce forest.

The lake is of great importance as a low-disturbance breeding and wintering habitat for rare water bird species such as cormorants, grebes, table ducks, gadwalls and tufted ducks. In winter, geese and mergansers as well as goldeneyes use the water. The shallow water zones and small bodies of water are of great importance for amphibians and are a potential habitat for the rare natterjack toad. The open sand and gravel areas are a potential habitat for the endangered sand lizard. ..."

The 26 hectare Oerkhaussee nature reserve with the identifier ME-015 is located in the urban area of the city of Hilden in the Mettmann district - between the Garather Forest in the west and Hilden-Süd in the east. In the north the Garather Mühlenbach touches the large nature reserve and in the south the Örkhausgraben forms the border.

The landscape plan prohibits recreational use. The area is not open to the public and hermetically fenced off. You can only get a small view of the lake from the bird watching station at the southeast corner of the lake.
