The mirror ponds are located directly above the Dieksee. The hiking trail runs between Dieksee and the mirror ponds. Originally laid out in the 19th century as fish breeding ponds, some of the mirror ponds are used as Kneipp basins. As it is fresh spring water, it is actually surprisingly cold. Depending on the season, you can then easily descend the few steps to the lake and warm up your feet in the lake. Since the mirror ponds are very protected, the water surface is literally smooth as a mirror.

Once laid out for fish farming, they now delight hikers as they pass by. There is also a covered rest area. Currently (January 19), the ponds are pretty dry (or the water is drained over winter?) And thus not as pretty sight as usual.

Very inviting is a visit to the natural Kneipp facility in the Holmwald at the Spiegelteichen. In the tour preparation necessarily think of towels! At the end of the Dieksee promenade, an idyllic forest path leads to the water treading plant in the streambed and the armpit with spring water.

What could be nicer for hikers than a water treading pool?
Happy is the one who has a towel in his backpack here ;-)

Ponds located in the Diekseeholm forest that were previously used for fish farming.

This natural attraction in Malente was created in 1869 for the breeding of noble fish. The ponds are fed by fresh spring water from the "Diekseeholm" forest area. They are connected to each other by small streams and channels.

The ponds got their name because the surrounding trees are reflected particularly beautifully in the calm, smooth water.

In the immediate vicinity of the mirror ponds is one of Malente's Kneipp pools: a natural water treading area and an arm Kneipp pool.

correct: "The name mirror pond came about because the trees were reflected in the water." Because the water is always smooth as glass :)

Since 1955, when Malente was designated a Kneipp spa, the mirror ponds have been used for water treatments according to Sebastian Kneipp. Since the constantly flowing, fresh and cool water is well suited for this, there is still a water treading area and an arm Kneipp pool here today.

The Duke of Oldenburg wanted to run a fish farm in the Dieksee, which belonged to him at the time. To this end, he had the current mirror ponds built in 1869, which were to serve as pre-breeding ponds for trout, among other things. However, this was not particularly successful and he only ran the fish farm as a sideline. However, the ponds were a lovely destination for tourists and so they were kept even after the fish farm was abandoned.

Today, the mirror ponds are not only a worthwhile walk along the banks, but also a Kneipp spa. You can tread water in the connecting stream or take an arm bath on the banks of the Dieksee. However, the water level was so catastrophic when I visited that the Kneipp pool had completely dried up. So it would hardly be usable in practice.

The mirror ponds were commissioned by the Grand Duke of Oldenburg, Nikolaus Friedrich Peter, who wanted to breed noble fish here. For this purpose, he set up a fish farm in the spring-rich area in 1869. The fish were raised in breeding vessels and small fish ponds through which fresh spring water from the "Holm" forest area flowed. The fish were to stay in these ponds, which were connected by channels and small streams, until they were big enough to be transferred to the nearby Dieksee. At that time, the ponds were an attraction for the spa guests of the town. But they were not profitable for the owner, because the autumn leaves made the water acidic and the otters also made plenty of use of them. So fish farming was soon stopped again. The ponds continued to be operated solely as a tourist attraction until the end of the 19th century.
