The downtown area between Hagia Sophia Park and Aristotle Square has been the center of Thessaloniki since its foundation in the fourth century BC. Layers of civilizations are piled atop each other, but the roman square layout of the second century AD prevails. Predominantly pedestrian, its most typical aspect is probably in the permanent market halls west of the square.
