In terms of traffic, Oldenburg was once a bottleneck – until the Huntebrücke came along in 1978. At the time, construction cost 16 million Deutschmarks and claimed human lives. NWZ editor Thomas Husmann looks back on the history of the striking building whose days are now numbered.

Oldenburg Up until the 1970s, Oldenburg enjoyed a dubious reputation as a bottleneck on the way to the northwest. In the summer months in particular, traffic on the bypass road was backed up in front of the numerous intersections on Cloppenburger Straße or Hauptstraße, which were controlled by traffic lights.
