The name of the patronal feast used here, "Dormition of the Virgin Mary" (also: "Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God"), is used in the Orthodox Christian churches. In German-speaking countries, the feast of the Assumption of Mary is popularly known as "Mariä Himmelfahrt" (Assumption of the Virgin Mary). It is generally celebrated on August 15th, although some Orthodox regional churches have different feast days. The tradition of this special feast—the Assumption of the Mother of God into Heaven, body and soul—dating back one and a half millennia was enshrined as dogma in the Catholic Church's doctrine by Pope Pius XII in 1950.
