Behind the thick walls is the nunnery of the Concepcionistas Franciscanas order, which is the second monastery in Garachico. The first monastery (San Diego) was torn down at the beginning of the 19th century.
The Convento (Monastery) Concepcionistas Franciscanas was built in 1637 and nuns have lived there since 1643. The monastery has survived many disasters, including the lava flows in May 1706. It could not withstand a major fire in 1709 and had to be rebuilt between 1745 and 1749.
