Around 9,000 hectares of land in the North Sea health resort of Bensersiel are drained by the Sielwerk. The inland is drained with the help of the Benser low and at the same time protected from the salty sea water and flooding. The lifting gates of the more than 30-year-old Sielwerk control the water levels in the deep automatically. Only at low tide can the gates drain around 30 million liters of water into the North Sea. One of Hieronimus' constant tasks is to monitor the outside and inside water levels, the wind direction and the wind speed.
