The Bethanienkirche on Mirbachplatz in Weißensee was built between 1900 and 1902 due to the considerable increase in the number of inhabitants in Neu-Weißensee. Mirbachplatz is a square in the Weißensee district of Berlin's Pankow district. It has borne this name since 1902. Before that, it was called Cuxhavener Platz.

The square is located in the Gründerviertel - an area in Berlin-Weißensee whose streets and squares are named after people who made a contribution to the development and expansion of Weißensee during the Gründerzeit.

At that time, Ernst Freiherr von Mirbach (1844-1925) was a member of the General Synodal Council of the Protestant Church. He was a great supporter of the church and had more than 300 churches built with the moral and material support of Empress Auguste Victoria. In 1890, the community leader Feldtmann turned to him for financial support for the construction of the church, which was to be built on Cuxhavener Platz.

When the topping-out ceremony for the Bethanienkirche was held in 1902, the square was renamed Mirbachplatz. The square is located at the intersection of Pistoriusstrasse with Schönstrasse, Gäblerstrasse, Behaimstrasse and Max-Steinke-Strasse. It was opened to the public in 1875. A spacious green area surrounds the Bethanienkirche building in the center, which has been preserved as a ruin.
