Castellfullit de la Roca is one of the smallest towns in Spain, with less than 1 km² in area. It is the second smallest in Catalonia and the smallest in the province of Gerona.
The town is located on a basaltic cliff. It is more than 50 meters high and almost a kilometer long. It is the consequence of the erosive action of the Fluviá and Toronell rivers on the volcanic remains from thousands of years ago. The superposition of two lava flows is observed: the first, 217,000 years old, comes from Batet de la Serra (Olot) and is made up of slabs. The second is about 192,000 years old and comes from the Begudá volcanoes (San Juan les Fonts). Given the spectacular profile of the town church next to the floating houses above, the image has been portrayed and painted numerous times.
