The Lasipalatsi was built in 1936 by the young Finnish architects Viljo Revell, Heimo Riihimäki and Niilo Kokko in the centre of Helsinki. The building with its restaurants, offices and a cinema was not originally intended to be a permanent structure.
The Lasipalatsi was extensively renovated from 1995 to 1998 with funding from the European Union (Community Initiative URBAN I), among others.

Lasipalatsi Square is behind Lasipalatsi at the former bus station. After the completion of the Amos Rex Museum, the square has become an object of contemporary architecture resembling an exotic lunar landscape.
