In 1963 the ferry station with its extensive shunting and storage facilities was opened. After the opening of the Great Belt crossing in 1997, freight traffic quickly disappeared, and the last passenger train would be routed in 2019. Since then, the station has only been served by local traffic every two hours, and the railway facilities that are no longer used are disappearing more and more into the undergrowth. Since the ferry docks and the train station will probably be demolished after the opening of the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel, the facilities are worth a visit for those who are interested.
