Traditions play a big role in the Fischland-Darß-Zingst region. The most visible remnants of the past are probably the colorful doors that decorate many of the houses on the peninsula, especially on the Darß.
Their appearance has changed significantly over the last 200 years. Anyone who thinks that doors have always been colorful is wrong. At their original peak, between 1790 and 1850, the typical Darß doors were monochrome and rather simple, apart from their rich ornamentation. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century, when the doors became an identifying feature of the region, that they were given the colorful paint that is so typical today.
