    The Oostwal, also known as the Stadsgracht or vest, dates from 1417. In 1405, the city of Goes received rights from the Countess Jacoba van Beireren to dig canals. Based on this privilege, a simple moat with five gates was built around the city. When digging the canal on the east side of the city, the remnants of the Korte Gos, an old creek, were used. This creek only needed to be widened and deepened.
    In 1586 a large-scale modernization of the city's defenses began. The medieval gates and associated bridges over the moat were all renewed. In the part on the Oostwal (the southeast corner of the city) a protruding bulwark was built. Soon the ramparts were planted with trees and given a new destination as a city park. The stone bridge dates from 1663 and is the only remaining original span across the city moat.
