In 1794, monks settled in the monastery, so-called Kollyvades, who had emigrated from the monastic colony on Mount Athos after there had been conflicts over forms of worship. They were led by Nifon of Chios. One of the monks was Grigorios Chatzistamatis, who had inherited land on Skiathos from his father.

In 1807, a group of Greek freedom fighters met in the monastery and took an oath of freedom on the newly designed flag of Greece, at that time the white cross on a sky-blue background, which had been woven in the monastery.

The Monastery of Evangelistria (Greek: Moni Evangelistrias) on Skiathos is the only active monastery on the island and has great historical significance, as it was here that the first Greek national flag was woven, blessed, and presented to the freedom fighters in 1807. Built between 1794 and 1806, it is known for its Byzantine architecture, a three-domed cruciform church, and a small museum of historical artifacts.
