A new bridge with an age-old story.
A bridge to a 'hauster put' = old Dutch for oyster pit is mentioned as early as 1554. That is a pit where oysters used to be collected to make them fat. That's proof that it's the authentic name. Now this Bailey bridge type serves to connect landscapes.

Such bridges are located at various locations across the Leopold Canal and have thus been given a second life. This bridge was not built until 1946. Yet they are all silent witnesses of the liberation struggle in September and October 1944 'The Battle of the Scheldt Estuary'. Only a few Bailey Bridges are still in the original strategic location.
Technical explanation: A bailey bridge is a bridge that consists of standard segments and as such can be built very quickly. The basis of the design is a truss bridge. This type of bridge was initially designed for use by military engineers and can span up to 60 meters freely and carry heavy vehicles. This bridge type is still in use for military and civilian applications and is regarded worldwide as a fine example of military engineering.
