Berrenrath has a new eye-catcher. An excavator shovel sits enthroned in the middle of the roundabout at the northern entrance to the town. The steel giant is 2.80 meters high and weighs around 2.5 tons. In its previous life it was able to swallow 6.3 cubic meters of earth in one fell swoop. At that time he sat with his 17 brothers on the gigantic bucket wheel of one of the mighty lignite excavators that are still in use in the region's opencast mines.

"We were looking for a symbol for the history of our place," remembers the chairman of the Wendelinusbrunnenverein and mayor Gerd Fabian. What fits better than choosing a piece of these giants, whose ancestors had also devoured the original place Berrenrath almost 50 years ago and forced the residents to resettle 600 meters away?
