The Kaiserstuhl ravines are centuries old. The paths dug into the loess due to the footsteps of humans and animals, and the use of carts and wagons. The water washed away the crushed loess, the paths slowly grew deeper, the walls became higher and steeper. In many places, branched systems of access routes to the vines were created.

ハイキング
Today only a small part of these traditional sunken paths of the Kaiserstuhl has been preserved. As part of the major land consolidations of the 1970s and 1980s, many were filled in or removed. In the years that followed, some served as wild rubbish dumps or they grew over if they were no longer used. Paths in hollow alleys should not be concreted or tarred so that they can continue to develop dynamically.
