The Wolfsee natural forest reserve is located in the FFH area (flora-fauna habitat) "Vorderer Steigerwald mit Schwanberg" and in the bird sanctuary "Südlicher Steigerwald" in the district of Kitzingen. It is located in the state forest and is managed by the Arnstein forestry operation of the Bavarian State Forests. The 77-hectare area was designated in 1978 as one of the first natural forest reserves in Bavaria.

LOCATION
The natural forest reserve lies on slightly inclined layers of the Gipskeuper. Only in the southern part has a steep step formed at the transition from the clayey myophoria layers to the reed sandstone. The soils belong to the type of alternating wet and dry clay and marl soils.

FOREST COMPANIES OF THE NATURAL FOREST RESERVE
The forests in the Wolfsee natural forest reserve have emerged from historical coppice management. Lumber was produced from the thick oak trees of the upper layer. The intermediate and lower trees were used as firewood every 20 to 30 years. Tree species such as hornbeam, lime and field maple tolerate this regular pruning. The Mittelwald has also promoted rare tree species such as service tree and service tree. The forest community is a "Cleaver-oak-hornbeam forest".

ECOLOGICAL FEATURES
The old oaks and the variety of other deciduous trees offer numerous woodpecker species an ideal habitat. The rare middle woodpecker, in particular, uses the coarse-barked tree species to search for food. Subsequent users of the woodpecker holes are numerous other bird species such as stock doves, pied flycatchers or collared flycatchers.
Many butterfly species are also found in the reserve, particularly nocturnal species such as the very rare russet elm owl and red-necked bear. The range of deadwood – including the dead and sun-kissed branches in the crown – offers many deadwood beetles and wood fungi ideal living conditions. Rare species such as the purple gloomy beetle and the dripping Schillerporling can be found here.

FOREST DEVELOPMENT
There is a 100 m × 100 m research area in the reserve. There all trees are permanently marked and numbered. The development of the individual trees and the deadwood, which is important for many species of animals and fungi, is examined at regular intervals by the Bavarian State Institute for Forestry and Forestry.
Between 1977 and 2011, the number of stems fell from 770 to 575 trees per hectare. The stock of wood has nevertheless increased during this period from 249 to 496 solid cubic meters per hectare, as the remaining trees have become significantly thicker. There are seven different tree species on the area, of which oak, hornbeam and small-leaved lime have the largest proportions.
In the last recording, only 10 solid cubic meters of dead wood per hectare were determined. This is due to the fact that few trees are currently in the phase of natural decay and the dead hornbeams were already largely decomposed.

HOW TO FIND THERE
Turn off the B 8 federal road at Altmannshausen in the direction of Dornheim. At Fischhof, a small road branches off to the left into the Limpurger forest. The first forest path on the right leads to the Wolfsee.
