The more than 2 meter high sculpture was erected in 2019 for the 20th birthday of the children's story of the Gruffalo by Beltz-Verlag and the city of Weinheim. The sculpture was made by chainsaw artist Gert Hildebrandt in just under 35 hours. He used the "Roman oak tree" that was badly damaged in a thunderstorm and stood on the Roman bridge for almost 300 years.
