The integrated Rhine program (IRP) Baden-Württemberg combines (integrates) the goals of flood protection on the Upper Rhine with the renaturation of the floodplain landscape. Projects are summarized in Framework Concept II that particularly promote a near-natural and floodplain-typical development on the Rhine. The relocation of the dam in Kirschgartshausen is the largest project from the framework concept II of the IRP.

The new floodplains near Kirschgartshausen are an important contribution to nature and species conservation on the Rhine. The relocation of the dam in Kirschgartshausen enables the floodplain landscape to be used for recreation in a way that is close to nature. The relocation of the Kirschgartshausen dam improves local flood protection in the greater Mannheim area.

With the redesign, depending on the Rhine outflow, the water will flow via a reactivated flood channel to the Lampertheim Altrhein. The relocation of the dam also improves local flood protection in the greater Mannheim area.
