The lighthouse is the main landmark on the north bank of the Shannon River and offers 90 meter views out to sea down to Kerry Head and Dingle, up the Shannon and the Clare coast and to the Cliffs of Moher to the north. One of the most important lights on the Irish coast, Loophead Lighthouse has guarded the entrance to Ireland's busiest river, the River Shannon, since 1670.

Loop Head Lighthouse is a free-standing, four-tier, circular plan lighthouse with a single bay – surrounded by a metal-framed flamed lantern, metal walkway and cut limestone walls. It is 23 m tall and its current range is 23 nautical miles (42 km or 26.5 mi).

My first visit to Loop Head Lighthouse was marked by an intensive encounter with the autumn weather on the Atlantic coast.

It was stormy, so stormy that I could hardly stand. The wind also came in gusts, which didn't make walking and standing any easier.

I braced against the wind, I stumbled, I ran backwards, raindrops lashed my face.

Nevertheless, or perhaps because of this, this lighthouse and the dramatic cliffs on which it stands have become a place that has left a lasting impression on me and has helped shape my image of Ireland.

By the way, the lighthouse can be visited from April to October.
When it's not that windy, it's worth taking a walk around the lighthouse.
Here you have a great and sometimes spectacular view of a fantastically beautiful coastal landscape and the impressive cliffs at close range.
