Horín Castle

Near Mělník, almost within sight of the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe rivers, stands the Rococo Hořín Castle. The original hunting lodge is located in the village of Hořín and was built at the end of the 17th century at the request of Count Jakub Černín according to the design of the architect GB Alliprandi. It was decorated with paintings by the painter FM Schiffer and his brother Antonín. In 1701, a riding hall was added to the castle.

Another owner, František Josef Černín, was not satisfied with the existing hunting lodge and had a Baroque chateau built in its place between 1713 and 1720 according to the design of FM Kaňka.

The Lobkowitz family (Czech spelling Lobkowicz or Lobkovic) is one of the oldest Bohemian noble families. This branch of the Old Bohemian family, which is still represented by numerous people in the Czech Republic and other European countries, originally had the surname Popel (German: ash).
