A Romanesque parish church was built on this site in the 13th century and today's magnificent church was built with money from the salt monopoly in the 15th century. Wilsnack pilgrims received an indulgence here around the same time.

Now it is a stately three-aisled, three-bay hall church with a single-bay ambulatory choir similar to that of the Nikolaikirche in Pritzwalk made of brick masonry with components made of fieldstone.
