The town of Costa di Mezzate is dominated by the Camozzi Vertova Castle which, although rising halfway up the Colle Alto called Colle San Geminiano, constitutes the most prominent element of the town.

It was erected by Emperor Otto I (962) but after the final defeat of Barbarossa in the battle of Legnano (1176), the properties were assigned by the Municipality of Bergamo, to the most faithful families of the captains, the Albertoni de Vertua (Vertova), the Rogerio de Scalve and the noble Del Zoppo family of Bergamo.

The castle is a vast complex made up of buildings, built in different eras (from the 12th to the 17th century), the northern part is the oldest and maintains, even after a 19th-century restoration, the typical character of medieval manors.

Beyond this first nucleus, various buildings extend towards the underlying village, transformed into an attractive country residence, in which an elegant 16th century loggia opens up.

The arrangement of a magnificent Italian garden, which still exists today, dates back to the 15th century.

The interiors are all frescoed and well preserved, in particular we remember the arms room which has a pavilion vault and the frescoed walls with mythological motifs, made in the eighteenth century by an unknown artist.

    よくある質問

Are there specific hiking trails directly accessible from Castello Camozzi Vertova, and what is their difficulty?

While the castle itself is a historical site, the surrounding area of Costa di Mezzate and the nearby hills offer opportunities for walks and hikes. There isn't a single 'castle trail' with official difficulty ratings, but you can explore local paths. Many visitors enjoy gentle strolls through the village or along the lower slopes of Colle San Geminiano for views of the castle. For more challenging hikes, you would typically venture into the broader Val Cavallina or Val Seriana regions, which offer a range of difficulties. Hikers can use komoot to discover and plan routes in the wider area, filtering by difficulty and length.

What are the parking options available when visiting Castello Camozzi Vertova?

The intro mentions researching parking options in Costa di Mezzate. While the castle is a private residence, there are usually public parking areas available within the town of Costa di Mezzate. These are typically street parking or small public lots. It's advisable to look for parking in the central areas of the village, from where the castle is easily accessible on foot. During peak times or special events, parking might be more challenging, so arriving earlier in the day is often recommended.

Is Castello Camozzi Vertova suitable for families with young children, particularly regarding walks or activities?

The castle itself, being a historical site primarily visited via guided tours, might be more engaging for older children and adults interested in history and architecture. However, the surrounding village and its gentle paths are suitable for family-friendly walks. The Italian garden, when accessible, can be a pleasant area for families to explore. For more active families, the nearby countryside offers easy walking routes that are suitable for children, allowing them to enjoy the outdoors with views of the castle from a distance.

What is the dog policy for Castello Camozzi Vertova and its gardens?

As Castello Camozzi Vertova is a private residence and its interior is accessed via guided tours, dogs are generally not permitted inside the castle or its formal Italian garden. However, well-behaved dogs on a leash are typically welcome in the public areas of Costa di Mezzate village and on the surrounding walking paths and trails. Always be mindful of local regulations and ensure your dog is under control.

Are there any permits required to visit Castello Camozzi Vertova or hike in the immediate vicinity?

To visit the interior of Castello Camozzi Vertova, you generally need to arrange a guided tour, which acts as your 'permit' for entry. This is typically done by reservation, especially for groups. For hiking on public paths and trails in the immediate vicinity of Costa di Mezzate, no special permits are usually required. However, if you plan to venture into specific natural parks or protected areas further afield, it's always wise to check for any local access rules or permit requirements.

Exploring the streets of Costa di Mezzate will reveal historical buildings and local churches that contribute to the area's character. For expansive views, consider walking up some of the gentle slopes surrounding the castle.

What is the best time of year to visit Castello Camozzi Vertova for optimal weather and garden beauty?
