To the southeast of the Sabotin ridge rises the 535 m high peak of St. Valentin, where the restored ruins of the church complex are visible. A pilgrimage church was built at this site at the end of the 14th century, where services were held until its abolition in 1782.

The church complex, which was preserved as a skeleton until the First World War, when it was almost destroyed, still attracted many visitors. In 1947, the state border was drawn along the Sabotin ridge and the area became almost inaccessible. After Slovenia gained independence, Sabotin became an extremely popular excursion spot.

From the top we have a wonderful view from the Goriška Brda across the Italian plain to the Dolomites and the Julian Alps to Sveta Gora in front of us to the edge of the Trnovski Gozd and the Vipava Valley to the Karst and the Gulf of Trieste. Below us, the Soča River winds towards the sea.

Even though the bastion on the summit has long been a ruin, the mountain retained its strategic importance up until the time of the First World War and was accordingly fought over. But you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view from here without any prior knowledge of history or curiosity.
