This characteristic bridge was already here in the 13th century to connect the two banks of the Maas. When the bridge built by the Romans before that collapsed, the bridge was rebuilt in 1275 with the arches as we know it today. The bridge has only been called the Sint-Servaasbrug since 1930. Before that time there were no other bridges across the Maas, so people simply spoke about De Brug.

The Romans built a bridge to connect the two banks of the Meuse; when this bridge collapsed in 1275, it was rebuilt with stone arches. The bridge was not given the name Sint-Servaasbrug until 1930. Before that time, there were no other bridges over the Meuse, so it was simply called "the bridge".

The Sint Servaasbrug, also known as the old bridge (Maastricht: aw brögk), is originally a stone arch bridge over the Maas from the 13th century in the Dutch city of Maastricht. The bridge is named after the 4th century Bishop of Maastricht, Sint-Servaas, but it was not given its current name until 1932. before that it was just the bridge. The Sint Servaasbrug is considered the oldest bridge in the Netherlands and a symbol of the city of Maastricht. The building is a national monument.
