The tree felling work in spring 2020 was deliberately used to accumulate dead wood. The felled trees were not transported away but lay criss-cross over the Ohligsbach. This is intended to create new habitats for flora and fauna. At the moment (November 2020) it still looks a bit wild, but you can already see the newly organized vegetation.

On a journey of discovery in Ohligsbachtal

The Ohligsbachtal, better known to the inhabitants of the Bietzerbergstadteile as "Mühlental", has been used since the Middle Ages by the people living and working there in very different ways. Over the centuries, the little valley has been home to oil and grain mills, where quarries have been created, manure produced, grapevines cultivated, fruit orchards cultivated and electricity produced.

In Ohligsbachtal also one of the first landscape parks of our region was created. A system of trenches connected mill and fish ponds with the historic "Saarmühle", which had to make way for the construction of the Bundesstraße 51 in the 1970s.

On the initiative of the "Mühlental Working Group" and with the active support of the Employment Initiative Merzig (BIM), an employment and qualification project for long-term unemployed people, in 2004 the traces of this eventful history in the form of a circular route for hikers interested in history and nature could be experienced again made. Visitors will learn about the history of the valley on large information boards with pictures, small stories and historical documents at six points of particular interest. The landmark of the historic Mühlental, the "round tower", takes the form of a logo designed by Prof. Paul Schneider, the well-known Saarland sculptor living in Bietzen for many years, through the landscape and history of the Ohligbachtal.

The hiking trail "Historical Mühlental" is only a few meters away from the train stop "Fremersdorf". There are also good parking facilities for cars.
