Schanzberg Section Fortification

The ringfort on the Schanzberg hill is situated on a plateau that rises gently to the north and juts out like a spur to the south, offering a wide view over the upper valley of the Black Laber River. The site is classified as a "ringfort from the prehistoric and early historic period, a prehistoric hilltop settlement."

On a gently sloping plateau, a rampart 7–12 m wide and in some places 2 m high encloses an area of 145 × 70 m. A barely discernible ditch runs along the northern narrow side. On the other sides, the rampart follows the upper edge of the steep slope. A shallow ditch is present in the southwest. Minor wall remnants can still be found in the interior of the northern third; the area is barren.

The site appears to have been built in two phases. In the first phase, the almost semicircular inner bailey was constructed in the south, the northern end of which is now formed by a heavily collapsed wall. This first ringfort was fronted to the north by a largely leveled ditch, the western part of which is still discernible in the terrain. This inner area, covering 0.6 hectares, is a relatively small fortification and was later extended to the north. For this purpose, the northern section of the rampart was largely removed, as evidenced by its significantly poorer state of preservation compared to the other rampart sections. To the north, a new, semicircular rampart was constructed towards the highest point of the ridge. This rampart was considerably higher than the older sections to the west, south, and east. Its flanks were also steeper and rose more prominently above the inner area than before. The rampart crest features a stone structure, which can likely also be considered a wall. To the north and northeast, this extension was also secured against the ridge by a ditch. At least during the later phase of construction, the entrance was located in the northeast of the site, at the interface between the older fortification and the newly added rampart.

Only a few surface finds have been discovered on the Schanzberg hill; archaeological excavations are still pending. However, some pottery shards have been recovered from the western rampart of the older, southern part of the site. These, along with prehistoric pottery shards and two flint tools, suggest a sparse settlement of the ridge during the Bronze Age or Hallstatt period.
