    The impressive Willibrordus Basilica is considered the most important religious monument in the country. Erected in the 11th century, it was rebuilt in the original Romanesque style after being badly damaged during World War II. A source attracts many pilgrims who wish to cure their illnesses (including eczema).

      The Imperial Abbey of Echternach in the Luxembourg city of Echternach was a Benedictine monastery named St. Peter and Paul (previously collegiate monastery) and imperial territory in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. In addition to large parts of the convent building, the reconstructed St. Willibrord basilica has been preserved from the monastery. The territory of the former imperial abbey of Echternach is now largely in the Federal Republic of Germany, to a lesser extent in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and in the Kingdom of the Netherlands [1]. The St. Willibrord basilica and large parts of the convent buildings are in Echternach. As a Free Imperial Abbey, it was imperial direct, possessed imperial territory and recognized only three masters, namely God, Pope and the Roman-German Emperor.

        This impressive basilica is an intermediate destination on the Way of St. James when - coming from Cologne, for example - crosses the southern Eifel in the direction of Trier. Viewed on the map, it is of course a detour, a Luxembourg branch, so to speak, but the shortest distance between two places has not always counted for the pilgrimage route, but significant sanctuaries along the way were also important intermediate destinations. This basilica in Echternach contains the bones of Saint Willibrord in the crypt.

The territory of the former Reichsabtei Echternach lies today for the most part in the Federal Republic of Germany, to a lesser extent in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and in the Kingdom of the Netherlands [1]. The Basilica of St. Willibrord and large parts of the convent buildings are located in Echternach. As a free imperial abbey, it was imperially immediate, had a realm that was immediately in the hands of the empire, and always recognized only three lords, namely, God, the Pope, and the Roman-German Emperor.
