Korenmolen De Zwaluw is a so-called tower mill. This type of windmill is usually located in a town or village, as the windmill has to protrude above the roofs of the surrounding houses to catch the wind. The height of the mill, including the blades, is 35 meters. The mill has four attics; the barn attic, the grinding attic, the stone attic and above that the roof or lubricating attic. If you stand on the scaffolding or orbit and look out over Hoogeveen, you are at a height of approximately 10 metres. When the mill is running with four full sails, it has a windage of 120 square meters. The length of the rods (wings) is 24.60 m. According to old data, Hoogeveen already had a mill on the Molendijk, the current Schutstraat, in the middle of the 17th century.
