The so-called “Deer Gate” was the access gate to the “Wildlife Park” or “Tiergarten” behind it.
It was built in 1870 by Grand Duke Nikolaus Friedrich Peter after the park had been expanded to the south as far as today's Parkstrasse by the demolition of the old Vorwerk, an old supply yard for the castle.
The bronze stags, which were cast based on a model by Christian Daniel Rauch, refer to the character of the park behind them.
After the Second World War, in times of economic hardship and scarcity of raw materials, the deer disappeared one day. They were stolen!
The gate architecture itself also gradually deteriorated, especially since the gate's original function was no longer of any importance.
Years later, however, the monumental value of the deer gate was rediscovered, and in the 1990s the gate was gradually restored thanks to a citizens' initiative.
