The plane tree was planted around 150 years ago along the banks of the Grote Nete (and the branches hang over it nicely for photo enthusiasts) as a 'corner tree' to demarcate the ownership situation of the Hof Ter Laken castle domain, as the information board for it explains (see photo). It can also be seen in the 1975 movie Pallieter and the foot was apparently also a hiding place for soldiers in WW2. But you can also read that on the information board.
